In the middle of this year, Google, Apple and Microsoft teamed up to put an end to passwords, shortly after presenting Passkeys, their identification proposal that will finally make us forget these passwords. passwords we don’t want to remember and are prone to leaks.
Well for that future without passwordGoogle has just announced that starting today Security keys are starting to arrive on Android and Chromeso that in a few weeks we will start forgetting some passwords if the proposal of the main technology companies is well received by users and developers.
What are access keys
Las Passkeys or access keys are a much more secure replacement for passwords and other authentication factors, since they cannot be reused, they are not filtered and they protect users against phishing attacks.
Access keys are created via the authentication of our device. Therefore, to create an access key to identify ourselves in an application or website, we will have to use our PIN code, our fingerprint, our face or our iris, depending on the biometric authentication supported on our android mobile. This is how Google will verify that it is us, by verifying that we are the owner of the mobile.
Security keys are based on industry standards and work on different operating systems and browsers. Being behind this initiative Google, Apple and Microsoft, we already know that they will have a lot of support and it will be difficult to find a service that does not support this new identification by access codes.
How access keys work
When an application or website asks us to register or identify ourselves, our Android device will allow us to create a password for said website or application, that we must confirm that it is us either by putting our fingerprint or by using the PIN code or the unlock pattern of the mobile.
Once the access code has been created, sync securely via Google Password Manager so that we can recover all these encrypted access keys in case we change our mobile. Then, when an application or website can log us in, with an interface very similar to Google’s autocomplete, we can select the Passkey user and identify ourselves with the fingerprint, PIN or method unlock we have configured.
Also in browser Chromium for the desktop comes Passkey support, and there when we want to identify ourselves we will have to Scan the QR code that will appear on the screen with your mobile. Once scanned, we can identify ourselves from the mobile to connect from the computer.
Google expects all of these features to be available worldwide by the end of 2022. For the rest of the year, Google will launch an API for Android navigation applications so that developers can start implementing the new identification with these access codes that will use our mobile as a password.
