The next Mortal Kombat is not a traditional fighting game. The next project of the developer NetherRealm Studios is called Spinoff Mortal Kombat: Assaultbeing described by studio and publisher Warner Bros. Games as a new “collecting RPG” due for release in 2023 for mobile devices.

According to a press release Mortal Kombat: Assault lets players build a team of fighters and fight in “massive real-time group battles”. The Mortal Kombat series has a long list of playable characters – and no shortage of supporting characters to join them – so a spin-off in the style of free-to-play collectibles like war of stars: Galaxy of Heroes, Wonder future fightand Pokémon master EX seems well suited to exploiting this deep list (and many existing MK character variations).

WB Games and NetherRealm have shared few details about it Mortal Kombat: Assault on Tuesday, but promised a “cinematic story experience” alongside collection RPG mechanics.

Ed Boon, Chief Creative Officer of NetherRealm Studios and co-creator of Mortal Kombat said rush will “stay true to its core visceral nature” and offer “strategic team-based collection RPG with fast-paced group melee combat.”

Mortal Kombat: Assault is a successor to NetherRealm Mortal Kombat Mobile, which leans more towards the 2D fighting style of the series. According to Warner Bros., this game has more than 150 million installs on both Android and iOS platforms.

The Mortal Kombat franchise recently celebrated its 30th anniversary. The latest main game in the series, Mortal Kombat 11was released in 2019. It is widely expected that NetherRealm will soon unveil a sequel to this game.
