You buy a $2,000 graphics card and it burns, what’s wrong with NVIDIA?

burns, buy, card, graphics, NVIDIA, Whats, Wrong

The new power cable for high-end graphics cards, the 12+4 pin one, also known as 12VHPWR, is only supported by NVIDIA, which has already launched two graphics cards on the market with said connector. We are referring to the RTX 3090 Ti and the RTX 4090. While AMD has confirmed that it will not use said connection and Intel with its ARC Alchemist has not either. The reason ? It seems that this cable is not intended for long gaming sessions.

Why does the RTX 4090 burn out?

well really it’s not the NVIDIA card that’s burned out, but the 12+4 pin cable it uses to power itself, which has the problem that depending on how we have placed it, it can overheat and create a fire inside the case of our PC. The reason? Well, apparently the cable has to be bent in a specific way, as you can see in the following image.

Correct placement of the RTX 4090 RTX 3090 Ti power cable

that is to say noor we can bend the cable neither vertically nor horizontally, but calculate 35mm from the end and do it. This is something that was unknown and many users who bought an RTX 4090 encountered serious problems. Since a third of my say that said cable meltednot being able to use their RTX 4090, which cost them over $2,000.

Worst of all about the cable burnt RTX 4090 is that this issue is compounded with high gaming sessions. NVIDIA has long seemed embarrassed to say that its main market is graphics cards for video games and that they have AI on their lips all the time. And it is that many users are going to spend several hours playing with their new superior graphics card and someone who has paid such a sum of money is going to want a product that works well from the first minute to the last.

A quality issue that should have been fixed

Quality departments are important in every company, more than anything, because they are responsible for ensuring that products leave the factory in optimal condition. For example, if you have a cookie factory, you will want them all to have the flavor that characterizes you, but that no box comes out, nor poached box. NVIDIA should not let this issue show up in their productmore than anything because of two very basic facts: the first is that it gives a very bad image, the second is that it reduces the reluctance towards the new connector.

The reason why these high consumptions are sought after today is to take graphics cards to the highest level in terms of voltage and clock speed in order to extract the maximum possible power from them. Good also to be able to implement video memories with high bandwidth and power consumption such as GDDR6X. There’s no doubt that the RTX 4090 is the most powerful card and thing we’ve seen in years, but there’s no doubt that NVIDIA could have avoided this issue with a little more tact.

Officially they have already confirmed that they will study the problem, which is something, but such oversights cannot occur in a product over 2000 dollars.
