In an interview with friends of Time Extensionthe creator of Tunic, Andrew Shouldice, has resolved several unknowns about its development. One that has caught our attention is the his biggest inspirations when creating the game.

Although many of us assumed that Tunic drank from The Legend of Zeldathe truth is that knowing that is also inspired by Super Mario it’s a nice surprise! You can read the excerpt from the interview below, where he talks about the impact it had on him to meet the mythical Warp Zone from Super Mario Bros. for NES for the first time in one of his games:

We had a copy of Super Mario Bros. at home. One of my memories is finding the Warp Zone for the first time. I want to think that it is an important moment with a lot of gravity… I was very young at that time. The word “Zone” was an unusual word that he probably hadn’t seen before. “Warp” was a word he hadn’t seen before. Walking over the visible limits of the level, doing something that looks like it’s going to break the game… and then, a bunch of words you don’t understand. It was paralyzing and wonderful. I feel like that moment, being too poetic about it, rippled forward with unknown languages and new, secret potential.
