It’s one of those memes that is reality: Chrome is consuming too much memory. This has always been his problem, since his first releases, and it hasn’t been fully resolved even after going through 100 releases.
[Así de importante es borrar la caché y cookies de Chrome, y de otros navegadores]
The good news is that it’s a little better than before, and that Google continues to develop features that combat overuse. The latter is being tested in Chrome Canary, the development version of the browser.
Chrome memory issue
This time, it looks like Google wants to approach the memory issue from a different angle; instead of optimizing memory usage, as was the case in previous versions, he decided it was best to just stop using it.
It sounds simple, but it’s not at all. That’s where the new feature called “Memory Saver” comes in, which has appeared in the settings menu of the Chrome Canary app.
When this function is activated, Chrome will show us a new icon on the right side of the address bar, which indicates that the application is saving memory. It does this by focusing on detecting tabs that have been inactive for a while, and delete them from memory. However, the tabs are not deleted and we can always come back to them whenever we want, although they will have to be reloaded.
In other words, if you haven’t switched to a tab for a long time, it will be “unloaded” from memory and will stop taking up space, which can be used by other applications or tabs. When we reopen this tab, a message will appear reminding us that it has been inactive, telling us how much memory has been saved, and it will load the page again.
Of course, there are many occasions when this does not suit us; there are pages that we always want to keep in the background and never close, such as a media player, a social network or a real-time news page. Therefore, Chrome will allow us add exceptions which will never be erased from memory.
In addition to Memory Saver, Google is also experimenting with Battery Saver, which disables advanced features like smooth scrolling, visual effects, and background charging for those times when you want to extend the battery life as much as possible. your device. .
It remains to be seen whether these new functions will be of any use. We will still have to wait to test them when they reach the stable version of Chrome in future versions of the application.
