Wondering how to create a video game? The editorial team takes you behind the scenes at Ubisoft in Milan to follow in more detail the development of the game Mario & The Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, released on October 20th.
A marriage between two worlds
Five years after the release of Mario + The Rabbids Kingdom Battle, we invite you to discover the evolution of the new opus Sparks of Hope. The studios’ challenge was to create Ubisoft’s best Mario game
A union full of challenges
The development of a video game is complex, several poles of teams work simultaneously on the different phases that make up the program. There are about four hundred who worked on this episode, from all four corners of the world. Here Ubisoft preserves the essence of Super Mario Galaxy with a different game dynamic, thanks in particular to the evolution of the combat system. The clashes are now more intense and strategic than ever.
Freedom of movement was our most ambitious project, several prototypes were necessary and it really wasn’t easy until we had a click. We created a new kind of game and gave players a reason to come back and play it. – David Soliani, Creative Director.
The 2D artists responsible for transcribing the screenwriters’ vision wanted to create the Luma-Crétins (major creatures in the game) along with a Princess Harmony (the famous Nintendo character) caricatured in the guise of a lazy character . 3D artists, on the other hand, tried to create an inspired artistic direction through illustrated books and paintings. Finally, the soundtrack is signed by three composers recognized in the world of video games: Grant Kirkhope (already represented in the last Mario + The Rabbids), Gareth Coker (Minecraft) and Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy…). Everything was performed and recorded in Japan.
The team plans to next focus on three DLCs coming later, with new planets and possibly the return of Rayman!
