Since yesterday, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is officially available in its entirety – and the return to the popular PC platform Steam has already paid off for the publisher.
After several years of abstinence, the shooter series Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has officially returned to the PC platform Steam this year – and this step has already proven to be absolutely correct. Reason: This year’s shooter was by far the most successful start of a franchise offshoot on Steam ever.
After the campaign was already available in Early Access, countless players romped around in the title via Steam yesterday after the official and complete release. According to the Steam Database, the peak value was 247,839 gamers at the same time.
This year’s part thus surpasses the previous leader in this category by a large margin. That was Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, which peaked at a comparatively paltry 63,681 gamers on Steam during its launch window. So Modern Warfare 2 attracted a multiple of that and landed directly in the top 5 most played titles on Steam at all. At the same time, the number of players in the beta test phase was clearly surpassed last month.
Also noteworthy: This is not even the case for all PC players, as many will continue to access the title via Battle.net. And: Buyers from other third-party stores inevitably end up on Blizzard’s own platform and not on Steam. Overall, the number of PC players should be significantly higher again.
