Phil Spencer knows that the last big first-party game was too long ago

Microsoft’s Phil Spencer also knows that it’s been a long time since the last major first-party game for the Xbox.

Some players on Xbox may have missed really big first-party blockbusters this year. And he’s not wrong about that.

In addition to the high ambitions of the developers, one of the main reasons for this is the pandemic. This led to longer production times, which are accompanied by a postponement.

Phil Spencer knows that too. The gaming CEO and head of the Xbox division spoke to the Same Brain podcast about the lack of first-party blockbusters and the prospect for 2023.

Spencer is aware of the first-party lull and that gamers expect great games for their Xbox platform investment.

“One thing we’ve definitely heard loud and clear is that it’s been too long since we’ve released a big first-party game.”

“We can make excuses about Covid and other things, but ultimately I know people are investing in our platform and they want great games.”

Spencer is looking forward to 2023. They are out of what the pandemic was doing to production plans and the games are going well.

Despite new parts for Call of Duty and God of War, the games industry hasn’t launched so few new games for this year’s Christmas business for a long time, as he says.

“And as an industry, we’ve had fewer games this holiday season than we’ve had in a long time, just thinking about launches. Call of Duty is coming, God of War is coming – which is great – and Nintendo has had a good year. But in general I would say we fell a bit short.”
For 2023, Redfall and Starfield are the first two real first-party games for the Xbox. Both from the House of Bethesda.

“But looking ahead to 2023, there’s a great lineup of games to look forward to. Getting our first real Xbox first party games from Bethesda and shipping them with Redfall and Starfield is going to be a lot of fun.”
