What’s better than a 2D Metroidvania style adventure game? I’ll tell you: A 2D Metroidvania-style adventure game built around self-discovery, ancient mysteries, and tentacles of cosmic horror.Welcome to ghost song – An indie game is coming Xbox Game Pass This has gotten people talking today. Hollow knight, eat your heart.
“On the desolate moon of Lorian, a deadsuit wakes from its slumber — fully armed, ready for battle, with clear memories,” says the game’s majestic and truly engrossing promo. “But something new is stirring.”
The task of the game is to find answers beneath the surface. Whether you’re scrambling through meandering caves illuminated only by bioluminescent flora, or going head-to-head with strange and powerful creatures, Ghost Song finds everything that makes Dead Cells, Hollow Knight and Carrion a Game Pass hit.
As you’d expect from a game in the genre, you’ll need to acquire new abilities as you explore that will help you uncover the long-buried secrets of this disturbing alien world. “Into the dark – only then will you know (or will it remember?) the truth,” the press release concluded. Aggressive.
Our colleagues at RPS point out that the game is “a moody Metroidvania with enough Hollow Knight DNA to get you through until Silksong” – great news! – but sadly “it’s never going to sing the way you want it to”. Sounds a bit like an island, then.
“It may lack a bit of originality to help it stand out from its contemporaries in a fairly crowded market,” ScreenRant added, “but the game does provide a very enjoyable experience.”
GameGrin has a 10/10 full rating, with a slightly higher rating, saying, “Ghost Song is the perfect marriage of Metroid and Hollow Knight to create a gorgeous game full of exploration, a great story, and a creepy atmosphere.”
TechRaptor points out that while the game has some gorgeous graphics and feels great in the hand, it does lack technical improvements – a criticism I’ve seen in some of the other reviews.
So, despite some minor complaints, the critical consensus on Ghost Song so far is that, simply put, it’s good. It ranks pretty well on OpenCritic, and 88 (PC version) on MetaCritic – which is higher than Scorn, TemTem, Vampire Survivors, and Immortality, for what it’s worth.
If you’re a Game Pass subscriber, you’ve got nothing to lose when checking out this game – at least, it’s another cool game, and we’ll be waiting, patiently, to hear what Team Cherry is all about vs. Hollow Knight: Silksong collaboration.
The game is also available on PlayStation consoles and PCs.
