We all use the Internet every day (logically, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this article), but usually only have a handful of fixed contact points that we don’t want to do without and that we visit at least once a day, but usually more often.
As a result, we are not even aware of the size of the Internet. Because what we see from the Internet is only a tiny fraction of the large network that connects the world and us humans and is simply indispensable.
Creating your own website has never been easier than it is today. For a web presence you only need a more or less good idea and a few minutes of your time. In those blog providers and website builders like WordPress, Jimdo, Wix and Co. you click together a website and make it live, finished.
This begs the exciting question: How many websites does the Internet actually contain? We have taken on this topic and present you with an answer.
Millions? Not quite, there are a few zeros missing!
It should be said in advance: The Internet does not stand still. It is therefore not possible to give an exact number to the second in this article. But we can at least approximate the total. It’s worth taking a look at Internet Live Stats. This contact point has set itself the goal of using an algorithm to count the websites currently available online.
The two billion will soon be reached. More specifically, at the time these words are typed, they are accurate 1.996.859.314 Websites. Tendency: strongly increasing. About three pages are added every second. The milestone should therefore be reached soon.
Curious: Only a fraction of all websites are active at all, it is estimated at around 200 million. This is impressive evidence that the Internet is made up of much more than just the components that are obvious to us.
facts about the internet
Before we release you into the wild world of the internet with this impressive number, here are a few fun facts about the web:
- The first website was published by British physicist Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the Internet as we know it. The domain is still available!
- It was not until 2016 that the one billion website mark was broken – that is, after around 23 years since the Internet existed. This underscores how rapidly the web has grown in the past six years alone.
- Google is and remains the No. 1 for many of us to find our way around the Internet at all. The search engine processes over three billion search queries for us every day!
