^ Stay tuned for Jim’s explanation of Ragnarök’s display settings, and how important they are.
This is a fair question.Last week, the Santa Monica studio released an infographic detailing the highly anticipated nine possible graphics modes God of War: Ragnarok. This may seem like overkill to some, especially (so the argument goes) this is a console game, so all this visual optimization stuff should definitely be left to the developers.should not be, eventually, until them Deciding how to best run their game on standardized hardware?
Well, I guess the argument makes sense. But this infographic, although it looks like a spreadsheet at first, is just basic consumer information that tells you what to expect from the product in terms of its compatibility with your setup. There is no single use case for all of these “nine patterns” to work (unless you work for our sister site, Digital Foundry, and it’s really your job to compare them). In fact, if you have a basic PS4, which the vast majority of PlayStation’s user base still uses, you don’t have to worry about that. Your choice is to start or stop. The game is essentially a PS4 game, so you won’t get a bad or scaled-down experience: fear not, this isn’t another Cyberpunk 2077 situation. It will work and you will have fun.
On the PS4 Pro and PS5, you can choose between performance and quality modes, and if you own either machine, you should be used to it by now. On PS5, there are some modifiers to how they behave based on your monitor capabilities and how your PS5 is set up at the system level. In short, if you have a VRR and/or 120Hz panel, the performance and quality modes take advantage of those.
In fact, I am particularly interested in Quality + HFR + VRR Configuration: Spider-Man has a similar mod, which is pretty awesome. You wouldn’t think the 40fps cap is much better than the 30fps cap, but it feels like a huge leap in performance. Not as snappy for frame headers that consider 60fps an acceptable minimum at best, but for my own purposes it’s a nice touch to get lovely judder-free motion without compromising image quality balance.
But that was by the way. If you don’t care about these things, you absolutely don’t need to. Just click to get started! Guarantee you have a good time. The Santa Monica studio is happy to accommodate those of us with the gear and the annoying habit of being fussy about these things, with preferences either way.
choose! Choice is good!
