You will be baked, and then there will be Cake
, which GLaDOS once lied to you about as she put you through the test chambers, now applies to your PC. Because the system requirements of the new edition of Valve’s classic will make your hardware sweat. Quite unlike the original, which itself walks on a potato (okay, no more portal puns).
The fact is: while Portal is very playable even on weaker systems, the new RTX version turns the tables. If you want to enjoy ray tracing, you should bring at least one RTX 3060 – at least.
But can it run Portal RTX?
The system requirements of Portal RTX set a new standard for high-end PC gaming, just like Crysis did back then. Crytek’s shooter was notoriously known for making even high-performance gaming PCs sweat. It will be very similar for Portal RTX, especially since an RTX 3080 is already recommended just to enjoy 60 FPS.
However, who? only
owns the very popular RTX 3060, the game can only be played in Full HD at 30 frames per second. With a puzzler like Portal, that could be enough, although some sequences require quick reactions, especially in the later areas of the game.
With both the RTX 3080 and the RTX 3060, it should be noted that both graphics cards only achieve these values with DLSS. With native resolution, the story would probably look very different.
If you don’t want to make any compromises and want to play the game in 4K resolution with ultra settings and 60 FPS, you have to get at least the RTX 4080. However, DLSS is also used here, but in the third version with frame generation. You can find out more about DLSS 3.0 here:

DLSS 3 only for RTX 4000: That’s why older graphics cards are left out
The requirements apart from the graphics card are also quite high. As a processor, you need at least an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or an Intel Core i7-6700 for Full HD, with 4K the requirements increase to a Ryzen 9 5900 or a Core i7-12700K. There is also at least 16 GB of RAM for Full HD and 32 GB for 4K.
Unfortunately, Nvidia and Valve have not yet provided any information on the 1440p resolution or what hardware is required for the native resolution. In general, the system requirements mentioned leave a few questions unanswered, such as the minimum requirements for AMD graphics cards.
You can see why the requirements are so high in the new trailer. The ray tracing effects are really very vivid.
