If you’re based in the United States, Disney+ pricing changes this Thursday (December 8, 2022). This is due to the addition of a new ad-supported tier.
The standard ad-free tier – which all users are currently active on – will drop from $7.99 per month and $79.99 per year to $10.99 per month and $109.99 per year for new and existing subscribers . The change will take place for current account holders when the next billing cycle takes place after December 8, 2022.
The new ad-supported tier will cost $7.99 per month and $79.99 per year. The UK and other countries won’t get the price increase just yet, but it should come sometime next year.
With the cost of living soaring, this price increase will not be a joy for many. However, don’t worry, you still have time to dodge it. We’ve rounded up all the options you can try to cut costs.
Buy an annual subscription
The first thing you can do is purchase or renew your account with an annual subscription before December 8.
An annual subscription costs $79.99. If you’re a new subscriber, you can sign up on the Disney+ website.
If you need to renew, follow these steps before December 8, 2022:
- Open the Disney+ website in your browser
- Click the profile icon on the right side and tap “Account” from the drop-down menu
- Follow the steps to manage your account and change your subscription – this will be different depending on how you pay for Disney+
If, however, you’re halfway through your annual subscription, it can be a pain. Fortunately, there is something else you can do.
Buy a 12-month Disney+ gift subscription
Another way to save some cash before the Disney+ price hike is to buy a 12-month gift subscription for yourself.
Gift subscriptions can be activated at any time. Therefore, you can subscribe to an annual subscription first and then activate it when your 12 months are up to keep the lowest prices for longer. There is currently no expiration date on gift subscriptions, so we don’t see why this wouldn’t be possible.

Here’s what you’ll need to do before December 8, 2022 if you are in the United States:
- Go to the Disney+ gift subscription page
- Enter the recipient’s name and email address – make sure this is an address that is not already registered on the site as it only applies to new customers
- Buy the 12 month subscription for $79.99
- Once the gift card arrives in your inbox, activate it only when you want.
- When you want to use the gift card, create a brand new Disney+ account using the gift card as a payment option
Bundle in Disney+ with a broadband contract
Another way to cut costs with your streaming subscription is to bundle Disney+ with a broadband contract. The longest Disney+ deal we’ve seen so far is six months of service on one of Verizon’s unlimited data plans in the US.

Cancel your subscription completely
If none of these options work for you, you can completely cancel your account with Disney+. You can always join further if a show/movie you are desperate to watch becomes available on the platform.

- Click the profile icon on the right side and tap “Account” from the drop-down menu
- Follow the steps to manage your account and cancel your subscription
