While Valve has not announced any Half-Life 3 but at least the VR branch Half-Life: Alyx, nostalgic fans of the series with Black Mesa are finally getting the ambitious reissue of the original game at hand. After the creators recently confirmed that they were about to release the finished game version 1.0, there is now a concrete release date.

The project, which was initiated by fans as a mod, has been officially approved by Valve and will finally leave early access status on March 5, 2020 – a whopping 14 years after the team at Crowbar Collective started the project. A corresponding announcement was now made on Steam, where Black Mesa is also officially for sale.

The original Half-Life was originally released for the PC in 1998 and is still considered one of the best genre representatives of all time. Protagonist Gordon Freemane returned in 2004, also in the highly acclaimed Sequel Half-Life 2, and was instrumental in the success story of Steam, which was to follow.

The new edition of the first part in the form of Black Mesa is now based on a heavily modified version of the source engine, which Half-Life 2 also relied on. In addition to noticeable graphic improvements, the gameplay was also tweaked, especially in the last act of the game, the Xen level.

Adam Engels, owner of Crowbar Collective, is correspondingly emotional in his statement on the announcement: "In March 2006, two of my college comrades ended up in the Black Mesa Mod team. From then on I became Art Lead, a partner in the new Crowbar Collective LLC, project manager and ultimately owner of the company, and as I write this, I realize that we are really planning to really complete Black Mesa, exactly 14 years after the month I first joined the team one project with a dedicated team that had a vision.
