If you thought you can’t expect much from a cheap mobile, you better change that mindset. Today, competition is so fierce that manufacturers cannot afford to launch anything on the market.

This is something that can easily be seen in the evolution of low-end and mid/low-end models; In this 2022 we have already seen that they have adapted some technologies considered “cutting edge” a few months ago.

Improvements to key components
The new Moto G Play presented today is a good example of the evolution of this range. Compared to the current model, which was launched in 2021, the improvements are obvious and in no case can it be said that it is the same mobile with the modified design.
Even if it must be said that the design is precisely one of the things that has changed the most. Now the G Play model looks a lot more like Motorola’s main phones, with a very similar camera set to, say, the Moto G 5G launched this year.
The good news continues if we turn the phone over, since the “drop” on the screen disappears, replaced by a hole in the screen that houses the front camera. And speaking of the screen, the first technical innovation we find is here, with a refresh rate of 90 Hz, something that until not so long ago was out of reach for many consumers. While it’s true that it won’t come as a surprise in terms of image quality, it’s a welcome leap.
The jump in cameras is also significant, although again, we can’t expect a revolution. At least the 16MP main camera will be different from the previous model’s 13MP, and it comes with a new macro sensor, albeit only 2MP, as well as the depth sensor. On the front, a 5 Mpx camera that will do just the right thing.
All these changes are good, but before throwing more praise at Motorola, it should be said that this Moto G Play will be very different from its predecessor, but it is very similar to the other models of the manufacturer launched this year. For example, it’s essentially the same phone as the Moto G Power, with the same Helio G37 processor and the same gigantic 5,000mAh battery with 10W charging; the design is pretty much the same too, with the same IP52 water resistance. It also has the same downsides, like no 5G or NFC. The choice between a Motorola model and another depends on small details like the main camera (50 Mpx on the Moto G Power).
The 2023 Moto G Play will be available for $169.99, with pricing to be confirmed in Europe.
