News JVTech Here is the amazing performance of the new Apple M2 Max chip
We now know we won’t be seeing a new Mac for 2022. We will therefore have to wait until early 2023 to discover the new professional M2 chips. On the other hand, we discover in advance some performance tests that suggest a surprise.
Are the M2 Max chips that disappointing?
A few days ago we were able to discover a benchmark that shows the performance of the future M2 Max chip. The result was rather disappointing with an increase by a little more than 10% compared to the predecessor.
But surprise, another benchmark has just been released and that changes the game. Codenamed Mac14.6, we discover the M2 Max chip as well a frequency of 3.68 GHz instead of the theoretical 3.54. Knowing that Apple imposes a performance cap on its chips still seems surprising.
The benchmarks between the M1 Max and M2 Max chip are divided as follows in the GeekBench test:
- M1 Max single core: 1746
- M1 Max Multi-core: 12154
- M2 Max Single Core Bench 1: 1853 (+6%)
- M2 Max Multicore Bank 1: 13855 (+13%)
- M2 Max Single Core Bench 2: 2027 (+14%)
- M2 Max Multicore Bank 2: 14888 (+19%)
Should we believe the benchmarks of the M2 Max chip?
The question of the reliability of benchmarks is a thorny issue that faces every new component. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure of performance is before the ride to have a majority of tests collecting the same performances.
Having such important results between two benchmarks remains very surprising. The first, the most conservative, seems the most logical. The difference between the basic chip M1 and M2 is a little more than 11%. This corresponds to Bank 1’s 13%.
We also note that the processor exceeds its maximum speed in the second benchmark. This is how it can be seen as a test model how far Apple can reliably push the processor or simply an unlocked version that allows overclocking.
On the other hand, if the second bank is legit, that would be great news because it could be a new 3 nm architecture. This would explain the lag of the chips, on the other hand Apple would use two different architectures in the same M2 range, it seems surprising.
The release of the next Macs with the famous processor should Arriving around March 2023. We will therefore have to wait patiently for that date and examine the benchmark sites closely to see if the results are correct.
