Actually, it’s a happy day. With Anno 1800: Rise of the New World the grand finale of the Anno-Seasons has finally appeared – and left us full of love in our extensive test. At the same time, Anno 1800 returns to Steam after a years-long absence. But that also brings unexpected problems.
Currently they are recent Steam reviews of Anno 1800 on “Balanced”, only 65 percent of the votes are positive. And Anno 1800 is considered an absolute construction game masterpiece. So what’s behind the bumpy Steam launch?
What happened?
Actually, Anno 1800 should also appear on Steam for its 2019 release. Shortly before the start, Ubisoft withdrew the building game there because they had entered into an exclusive deal with the Epic Store. Anyone who had already pre-ordered Anno 1800 on Steam could still play it there and received all the updates – but the main game was no longer available in the shop.
Anno 1800 has been back on Steam since December 8th – and with it the Year 4 Gold Edition (main game, Season 4 and Deluxe Pack) and the Year 4 Complete Edition aka Visionary Edition (main game, all four Seasons and Deluxe Pack) . The problem: If you still own Anno 1800 from the pre-order from 4 years ago, simply cannot buy these editions.
The players are angry in the ratings. Zibzarab writes something like:
»I would have liked to play the game again with the completely new content. But I can’t buy the Complete Edition because I already own the game on Steam and buying each DLC separately would cost another 200 dollars. No thank you.”
Others demand that at least the individual DLCs should be reduced as a thank you for the players who have been loyal to Anno on Steam for 4 years. Incidentally, Anno 1800 is still linked to the Ubisoft Launcher – even if the game is started via Steam.
But many others are also happy about the return on Steam and praise Anno 1800 as “the best building game ever made.” In our final DLC test, we too took an emotional farewell to the Anno 1800 seasons:
