death stranding 2 It was revealed this week that, according to Hideo Kojima himself, the game was rewritten due to the pandemic.
When the first Death Stranding launched in 2019, some thought the occasional enemy you encountered obsessed with stealing packages from one of the few delivery drivers in a post-apocalyptic America was a bit over the top. Then a pandemic hit in 2020, retroactively making the game an incredibly prescient one. So while Kojima had written the story before the pandemic, he had to completely change it once he got through it.
“I wrote the story before the pandemic, but after the pandemic, I rewrote the whole story from scratch,” Kojima told The Game Awards host Jeff Keys after the Death Stranding 2 reveal profit. “I also didn’t want to predict a future where there wasn’t more, so I rewrote it.”
Death Stranding wasn’t the only time Kojima predicted the future seemingly by accident. Fans have noticed before how Metal Gear Solid 2 has somewhat obscured the way misinformation spreads across the internet, before it became such a big problem as it is now.
That’s most of what Kojima has to say in the game, though, as he’s currently keeping it tight-lipped. Speaking of the trailer, Kojima did mention that he “put a lot of stuff in there, so I hope you guys talk about it and find details in it,” which I’m sure many eagle-eyed viewers will do in the days after the game is revealed.
Death Stranding 2 continues the style of the original game, with an older-looking Sam Bridges (Norman Reedus) and a more scruffy-haired Vulnerable (Lea Seydoux). There are also baby octopuses, mechas, and giant floating sculptures, all of which are pretty standard for a Hideo Kojima game.
