The previous Final Fantasy classics were known to have been remade in pixel form, but until now these have been reserved for PC and mobile platforms. The classic consoles were left empty-handed, but that could change now.
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters for the PC are available exclusively on Steam – and have been for a year. This could soon be over, because now it seems that classic consoles will also be added. In this respect, it could be a time exclusivity on Steam that is now expiring.
New age ratings for games from the ESRB now provide reason to believe. The US authorities have approved the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters for both Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo’s Switch; only an Xbox version is not mentioned. An official announcement of these console versions by Square Enix is still pending, but in view of the age ratings at the request of the studio it seems to be only a matter of form.
Starting tomorrow, December 13, there will be a Final Fantasy event celebrating the series’ 35th anniversary; Live streams will follow until December 18th. The chance seems high that there will already be official confirmation and that the pixel remaster will be released on PS4 and Switch in a timely manner.
