Amazon has confirmed that God of War is currently being adapted for TV. While rumors have swirled for a while (see: Deadline’s report from March) that Sony was considering adapting a PlayStation exclusive, it’s finally been confirmed via a tweet.
It’s not all of Amazon Studios’ upcoming video game adaptations, either. A Fallout TV series and even an adaptation of the Mass Effect series are currently in the works. also. HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us is coming to theaters, and will air on January 15, 2023.
Needless to say, we have a lot of TV adaptations to finish as quickly as possible. I still haven’t brought myself to watch Netflix’s Resident Evil series, and it looks like those shows are here to stay.
To confirm that a God of War adaptation is in the works, the Prime Video Twitter account shared a simple message: “God of War is coming,” along with a photo of Kratos and Atreus from God of War (2018). However, The Hollywood Reporter knows more details about the adaptation.
The game was adapted from Rage Judkins, creator of The Wheel of Time, and Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, creators of The Expanse. The adaptation will also feature Santa Monica Studio’s creative directors Cory Barlog, Yumi Yang, PlayStation Productions’ Qizilbash and Carter Swan, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. Additionally, Santa Monica Studios’ Jeff Ketcham will serve as co-executive producer on the show.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios’ global head of television, said, “God of War is a compelling, character-driven franchise that we believe will be The immersive world captivates our global clients with its rich storylines. We are honored to join Sony Pictures, PlayStation Productions and Santa Monica Studios in such a significant way to share the adventure of exploring the God of War myth.”
The play’s description begins with the death of Kratos’ wife, and he embarks on a dangerous journey with his estranged son to fulfill her last wish. “Kratos quickly realizes that this journey is an epic quest in disguise that will test the father-son bond and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
