Matter is the new home automation standard developed for enable interoperability between home devices, regardless of their manufacturer. Google has started preparing the SDK for Matter and today announced that Android devices are officially supported.
From the official blog of Google, it has been made public that Nest and Android devices are now compatible with the home automation standard. Thanks to the home application itself, Google Home, we can configure new devices compatible with Matter.
Google turns to Matter, an initiative in which it participated
This Google announcement is not surprising, because is one of the members of this initiative. The Connectivity Standards Alliance created this standard with the collaboration of more than 300 technology companies that cover all types of devices.
Now, from any Android mobile, we can configure home automation devices such as thermostats, smart bulbs and even locks. It’s about creating a consistent experience across brands, and thus avoid different home automation protocols. Previously, each manufacturer followed a protocol or used its own.
This complicated the interconnection between devices requiring users to install multiple applications. In addition, these household devices could not communicate with each other. As Google says, with Matter everything will work together and better. Users are the main beneficiaries of this protocol, which will require less effort and waste less time.
Starting today, Google devices will be updated to support Matter
Updating to support Matter will happen automatically, without having to intervene. We don’t need to perform any action, yes, with this protocol we will need a center or standard that functions as a control center for other devices. Among the Google devices that can work as such are the Google Home speakers, Google Home Mini, the Nest Hub control center (first and second generation) or the Nest Wifi Pro router.
As is customary with this type of technology, Matter will use our home’s WiFi network to connect all home automation but it will be easier to configure thanks to the Fast Pair function which speeds up the pairing process.
According to Google, more devices compatible with this protocol will arrive next year 2023They have also collaborated with Samsung to provide a common experience. We will be able to manage all the devices of the Korean firm that use SmartThings. We hope Matter will become the mainstream standard and make our lives easier.
