Over the next few years, the Star Wars library on Disney+ will grow, thanks to a slew of live-action shows. One of the most anticipated is a series about Ahsoka Tano, a character best known for The Clone Wars animated series.
Ahsoka was introduced to the world of live action in The Mandalorian Chapter 13, The Jedi. If you want to know more about this series, keep reading. We also have similar roundups for Andor Season 2 and Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2.
What is Ahsoka’s potential release date?
No official date has yet been given for Ahsoka. Production started in early May 2022, so we expect it to air sometime in 2023.
Who are the cast and crew?
Rosario Dawson will reprise her role as Ahsoka Tano from The Mandalorian. The character was originally voiced by Ashley Eckstein in Clone Wars and Rebels, but Dawson has been generally well received so far.
She’ll be joined by Hayden Christensen, who reprises his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (via The Hollywood Reporter). The two characters shared a bond in The Clone Wars, as Tano was Skywalker’s padawan.
Ahsoka is set to take place at the same time as The Mandalorian, which is five years after Return of the Jedi. Therefore, we expect Anakin to appear in flashbacks or as a Force Ghost.
Christensen also had a major role in the Obi-Wan series – but that takes place much earlier than Ahsoka.
Natasha Liu Bordizzo (best known for The Society) joins the cast as Sabine Wren, a young Mandalorian who dropped out of the Imperial Academy.
Birds of Prey star and Netflix thriller Kate, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, will also be joining the series – although her role is yet to be confirmed. Another star with an undisclosed character is Ivanna Sakhno.
Making Star Wars reported rumors that LucasFilm cast actresses to play Ahsoka at a younger age – possibly her teens, creating flashbacks to The Clone Wars era.
The Mandalorian’s Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni will both serve as executive producers, while Filoni will also act as a writer on the show. The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Peter Ramsey – best known for Into the Spider-Verse – will direct at least one episode of Ahsoka.
The Radio Times reported that Filoni had hinted that Star Wars Rebels Mandalorian graffiti artist Sabine Wren might join her on her travels – although it’s not official yet.
There have also been rumors about the casting of Ezra Bridger, but nothing concrete has been confirmed yet.
What is Ahsoka’s plot?
Plot details on Ahsoka are pretty slim at the moment, but we know it’ll be set in the same time frame as The Mandalorian.
Ahsoka mentioned finding Grand Admiral Thrawn (AKA Mitth’raw’nuruodo), a villain probably better known to the Rebels who disappeared with the Jedi-in-training, Ezra Bridger. Therefore, we suspect that Thrawn will be the main antagonist of the series, and that Ezra will also play a pivotal role in the story.
This is further backed up by Rosario Dawson at C2E2, who claimed they were trying to find Thrawn.
We also imagine we could get more details and backstory on Ahsoka’s time as the young apprentice of former Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker, and her subsequent battle with him as Darth Vader.
Ahsoka is reportedly tied to another new Star Wars show, Rangers of the New Republic. We also imagine we haven’t seen the last of her and her story overlapping with Mando’s.
Showrunner Dave Filoni reportedly saw a rough cut of an episode and had a visceral reaction to it:
