Leading Hollywood star Henry Cavill partners with Amazon to produce and star in a film Warhammer 40,000 Series. The mega corporation has secured the rights to the tabletop miniature game about aliens, demons and co religious fascistsand it sounds like the former face of The WitcherGeralt and DC’s superman will now attempt to turn one of the niche nerd franchises into the latest overpriced sucker of the streaming wars.
“Amazon is in final discussions about the rights to the Games Workshop-produced game after months of negotiations and fending off competing companies that have also applied for the rights.” The Hollywood Reporter reported on Thursday. Cavill would produce and star in the potential project, while Vertigo Entertainment (barbarian, don’t worry darling) is signed as executive producer.
The deal became official on Friday. Cavill, Amazon and Games Workshop confirmed the message in a press release. “To all of you warhammer To fans out there, I promise to respect this IP we love,” Cavill wrote on Instagram. “I promise to bring you something familiar. And I strive to bring you something amazing that has never been seen before.”
Rendering a galaxy-spanning sci-fi fantasy epic about space orcs and big guns be a huge and expensive undertaking. In a competition for the rights to Games Workshop warhammer 40K, Having Cavill on board undoubtedly helped. And owning a cloud computing company that prints money and just blew up $715 million Lord of the Rings TV Series, Amazon could certainly shorten the check.
How did we get to this point? Well, in August, industry insiders began teasing Cavill’s return to the role of Superman for the next phase of DC’s cinematic universe. He then appeared in a post-credits scene for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Black Adam. Next, Cavill announced that it was him really return to the role of Supermanand leave Netflix The Witcher after season three where the reins of geralt would be handed over to Liam Hemsworth. Fans were genuinely upset, with some blaming the show’s direction Not respecting source material enoughbut it was pretty clear that Cavill was new superman duties were to blame.
Black Adam bombarded by comic book blockbuster standards. And in the midst of a messy merger with Discovery, Warner Bros’ new boss decided to quit Guardians of the Galaxy Director James Gunn to completely redesign the DC cinematic universe. Gunn will do a Superman movie, but it will focus on a younger Clark Kent and have no place for Cavill in it. Oh no.
“Having been told by the studio to announce my return in October ahead of their hiring, this news isn’t the easiest of news, but such is life,” Cavil wrote then. “I respect that James and Peter have to build a universe. I wish them and everyone involved with the new universe the best of luck and happiness.”
At least that means he can go back The Witcher though, right? nope Variety reports that not much is happening. “The Witcher Season 4 proceeds unchanged,” diversity reported yesterday. “There’s a legacy of amazing, iconic characters where the actors have changed, and we’re very optimistic about that,” Netflix’s Peter Friedlander previously told the magazine.
Now Cavill has nowhere else to go except warhammer apparently. That man from UNCLE star’s love for PC and tabletop gaming in general and warhammer particularly, is well established at this point. If he doesn’t get huge, he is Build gaming rigs and Tour miniature shops. Since DC dropped Cavill, fans have been nonstop posting on declining social media platforms like Twitter about how now is the time for him to take Space Marines to a big-budget production. In less than a day, this meme has already become a prophecy.
Is that a long-term coup? warhammer Players or the dying breath of an entertainment industry that has nothing left to cannibalize remains to be seen.
