The force was strong then Star Wars: Dark Forces. The first-person shooter has left a big mark. After all, he shaped the canon of the universe at the time and is considered the (dark) father of Star Wars shooters. However, the title is not designed for current PCs, so far players have had to tinker with settings and set up a DOS box to get the title running.
Those days are over, after three years of development the fan project with the name is now available The Force Engine published. With it you can play the classic again without losing the charm of the original. You can see the trailer right here:

Star Wars Dark Forces: Thanks to the 4K remaster, the classic also runs on modern PCs
What’s in it?
Anyone watching the video will probably think: It looks the same as it did back then!
That’s not entirely wrong either, the general graphics haven’t changed much. But there are also a few changes here: you can now in 4K fight the stormtroopers who FPS are significantly higher and the resolution is now one Adjusted 16:9 screeneven wide-screen monitors are supported.
However, many of the differences are not obvious at first glance: Maus-Support with sensitivity setting is now included, but it can also played with the controller will. That new storage system doesn’t let you restart at charging points that are far away and the artificial intelligence of the boss opponent Boba Fett has also been improved.
By the way, if you are oversaturated with all the movies and series from the Star Wars universe, then the games could break you out of the rut. We talk about why in the following podcast:

But the best: A cumbersomely adjusted DosBox with all the associated bugs is not necessary and the old mods from back then can be downloaded without any problems. But if you want to play Dark Forces the way it was then, you can leave out all the conveniences: no mouse support, back to the outdated save points, the resolution back to 320×200. Just like back then – only with a higher frame rate.
Although players in Europey have only been able to buy Dark Forces for almost two years – before that the shooter was indicated:
Dark Forces
The coolest Star Wars shooter without Jedi was too brutal for Europey
Dark Forces won’t be the only game to benefit from the Force Engine either: Outlaws will soon be able to run on modern devices with the new Force Engine. Exactly when is still unclear.
how can i play it
Die Force Engine is free to download, but you must own Dark Forces to launch yourself into a galaxy far, far away. You don’t have to dig very deep into your pockets Steam currently costs just under 5 dollars for the title. In addition, only Windows operating systems are currently supported, with Linux and Mac to follow early next year.
But if the title is now too old for you and you would rather invest your time in current games, then you don’t have to wait long for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor! At this year’s Game Awards, not only was March 17, 2023 confirmed as the release, the first gameplay was also shown.
Are you going to catch up on Dark Forces after all these years, or are you looking forward to Jedi Survivor? Feel free to write it in the comments!
