Rainbow Six: Siege players recently received an unexpected in-game gift, as hackers have figured out how to post images directly to their screens via ban messages. As a result, memes, NSFW material, and an odd-looking rooster-like animal popped up in the game.
Usually, these ban messages just show the username of the account captured by Rainbow Six: Siege’s anti-cheat for all players in the game, as a permanent resiliency and reminder that the team keeps bashing the Ne’er-do-wells ban hammer.
However, since hackers have figured out how to display any image they like instead of the usual ban message, this ban announcement has been turned into a funnel that crafty players can use to funnel whatever jokes and inappropriate Content is fed directly into the wider community.
Before we dive into the details, it’s important to note early on that, luckily, you can avoid all risk of seeing any cartoon chickens, Christmas pigs, or truly disturbing images by going into the settings and making a quick change. By going to the HUD submenu, you should see an option called “bans”. Just turn it off and your favorite tactical FPS will be free of unwanted images.
The development team has yet to make an official statement on the issue, so for now it looks like the community will have to deal with this hack in the near future. You’ve got to get a feel for the development team here, though, and exposing players to porn that’s likely to be bloody and rancid is something you have to get your hands on as soon as possible. Our thoughts are with anyone who may be tinkering during winter break.
Leaving the legally messy stuff aside, there’s an undeniable amusing side to the whole affair, as hackers are simultaneously posting innocuous memes to the feeds of thousands of players. Of course, this undoubtedly resulted in key player errors and risky putts going unpunished, but the comedic value of the whole ordeal certainly outweighed the frustration.
