It seems like Mario fans can’t stop making trailers for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Films from Lighting as they’ve gone do it again.
Two months ago, we saw the initial trailer received by a man named endshowing hordes of penguins in their massive, intimidating N64 glory as they unleash their wrath on Bowser.
Then, just three weeks ago, when Illumination shared a brand new trailer for the movie, featuring Peach, Luigi, Donkey Kong and even Rainbow Road, YouTuber King Bob Gaming got to work on the new trailer. He started with a partial remake and joked about ruining the entire trailer if the clip got 10k likes…well, the likes came flooding in. His original clip only has 27k likes at the time of writing.
Of course, the fan then used all the resources at their disposal to recreate the entire two-minute trailer using Nintendo 64-era graphics. We see the polygonal Donkey Kong beating Mario to pieces, and a much smoother rainbow road with the go-karts we’ve often seen in Mario games instead of Toad’s monster truck from the original trailer.
However, the fan trailer is even more impressive because none of the characters shown in the trailer are actually in Super Mario 64; for example, there’s no sign of Luigi or Donkey Kong in the game unless you’re playing a later The NDS version, which for some reason featured Mario’s brother.
With that in mind, it’s possible that some of these assets were created from scratch, showing the effort fans are willing to put in to ensure their renditions of the trailer are faithful to the original. Impressive, and as a huge Super Mario 64 fan, deconstructions like this make me unbelievably happy.
King Bob Gaming, creator of the N64-inspired trailer, now jokes that if the video gets 100,000 likes, it will ruin the entire movie. It’s a terrible feat, and Nintendo probably won’t be the happier about it, but it’s sure to be a fun watch to watch when the original film hits theaters.
In the meantime, I’d love to see the creators scrap the original trailer entirely, because I can’t get enough of Super Mario 64’s penguin. What do you think of the N64 release of the Super Mario Bros. movie trailer, and are you interested in more?
