You can be good, you can be very good, and you can be amazingly good. And if you’ve been incredibly gifted, maybe you got a Mac this Christmas or you think the kings are going to bring you one. You can count yourself lucky a Mac isn’t exactly a cheap gift.
Taking advantage of the fact that you are opening it or going to open it these days, now is the perfect time to to perform certain tasks or tweaks on the Mac that you’ll enjoy over the years you’ll use it. It doesn’t matter if you’re a newbie or if you already have experience with the platform: a review never hurts.
Keep these habits in mind to take maximum care of your Mac
- If you don’t want to be inundated with notifications, it’s a very good idea to check the System Settings, Notifications section. Have No Mercy: disable all notifications that you do not consider essential. The fewer interruptions, the better.
- The healthiest thing you can do is get used to update the mac whenever a new version of macOS is released. You can enable automatic updates from the system settings, in the General > Software update section.
- If you have never backed up your files, you should do so as soon as possible. Time Machine It allows you to fulfill this good habit fully automatically, all you need is an external hard drive. You have the Time Machine settings in System Settings, General section.
- After setting up your Apple account on the Mac, it is highly recommended to synchronize all your master data in the cloud. Notes, agenda, calendar, bookmarks… this is information that won’t take up much space in iCloud but can save your life in the event of a disaster. You can enable or disable synchronization of this data in System Settings > your name > iCloud section.
- Use iCloud Drive This is very convenient, but always be careful that the files you copy there do not overload the space you have in the cloud. In System Settings > your name > iCloud section, you can check how much free space you have and decide to expand it if you find it useful.
- Putting your Mac to sleep is very convenient, but you shouldn’t get used to doing it all the time. The best is that turn it off once in a while so that the performance of the system does not suffer over the days. It is also recommended to deactivate the option to open the applications that we had open in the previous session, since this way you guarantee that the memory is cleared.
- Finally, if you want to keep your Mac as cool as possible, a highly recommended option is install an uninstaller applications such as AppCleaner (free on its website). There are several ways to uninstall apps on Mac, and this is one of the most effective. With it, you can be sure to eliminate all configuration and cache files left by applications in their wake.
Your new Mac will be your traveling companion for a long time, and the better you maintain it, the longer it will last you. You just have to not get too used to all this so that computer maintenance is child’s play.
