Politician: They are just like us. Or the version of ourselves that our parents wanted. Robert Garcia recently won a seat in Congress in California and chose to be sworn into office in the first edition of superman. And guess what, good for him. Clark Kent is a great role model for anyone who wants to make the world a little less terrible than it is now.
The former mayor of Long Beach, California, wasn’t content with just being sworn in under the US Constitution. He also attached a photo of his parents, his certificate of citizenship and a copy Superman number 1which he borrowed from the Library of Congress. my city reached out to ask about his personal relationship with the superman comics, but received no response at the time of publication.
The newly elected congressman is even willing to fight for his nerd credit rating. “For everyone who’s upset that I still read comics and is suggesting I need to read more seriously… anyone who understands comics knows that comics are an integral part of American fiction,” he said tweeted. “And the knowledge gained is invaluable. It’s some serious shit.”
Personally, I would accept civics reading recommendations from a man who now represents an entire county in California. So watch out, parents: if your child reads enough supermanthen they too can represent their fellow Americans in political office.
Garcia’s supporters pointed out that her former mayor always did the signs shown to be a comic freak. His enthusiastic tweets about the Library of Congress comics collection certainly felt a lot more human than a guy who says “Father. Husband” in her Twitter bio. Last November, he even threatened to hold congressional hearings to ask about James Gunn’s plans for the DC films. If only we all had that much power.
Politicians aren’t your friends, no matter how much they love the same media as you do. But it’s still fun to think about superman Comic that carries the same moral weight as the US Constitution.
