Wizards of the Coast has already teased at least five unannounced games in various stages of development.
Studios that could be affected by the cancellation include Otherside Entertainment and Hidden Path Entertainment, according to Forbes.
The former has two games in development: Thick as Thieves and immersive sim Argos: Riders of the Storm led by industry veteran Warren Spector. Defense Grid developer and Valve collaborator Hidden Path has D&D RPG listed as its last game in development.
In a statement to IGN, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) said it remains “committed to making digital gaming a cornerstone of its strategy” to bring its games to “gamers around the world.” The cancellation is part of changes to the company’s “long-term portfolio,” which will focus on games that are “strategicly aligned” with existing brands and that “show promise.”
It also confirmed that about 15 layoffs had occurred, but employees could apply for other positions at the company.
Just last year, WotC acquired Skeleton Key, the studio led by former BioWare developer Christian Dailey, and Invoke Games, which developed 2021’s Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance.
The company is also the publisher of games such as Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3.
