Gaming News Silent Hill 2 Remake: As Scary As The Original Game? Developers calm down and speak out
Silent Hill 2 is an absolute cult game that many consider to be one of the best of all time. The idea of a remake inevitably seems as enticing as it is dangerous, and it’s the Bloober team who will shoulder that heavy responsibility. One of the studio members rightly commented on this topic.
Bloober team, big winner
It has been rumored for some time that Silent Hill 2 will see the light of day again in the form of a remake; Likewise, rumors were circulating that Konami’s Bloober team had been chosen to carry out the work. Two things made official a few months ago! In reality, it’s a terrible slippery slope, since the legacy of such a title is massive and if the modernization efforts are attractive, then we shouldn’t break the valuable codes of the 2002 game.
Anna Jasińska, the Polish studio’s Chief Marketing Officer, recently spoke to DreadXP and talked about Silent Hill 2. She specifically went back to the origins of the project and the way Konami had approached the team.
The idea of working on this project haunted us for many years, and in 2019 we received an invitation from Konami to participate in the Tokyo Games Show. To our delight, Konami asked us to create a concept for a remake of the second part of the original game in exchange for the opportunity to bring that concept to life.
Obviously the developers had to show their fangs. Conversely, other studios were also present to develop the remake, without it being known which ones.
Of course we weren’t the only participants. Many other studios were also courting collaborations, but in the end it was our concept that convinced Konami.
They recognized our dedication and passion for horror and that was a huge reward for us. Our company was shocked when we received this euphoric news as many of the Bloober team are die-hard fans of the title. As for the apprehension, yes the pressure is on since we’re dealing with one of the best psychological horror games of all time.
No worries expected?
The first trailer for the game (find it below) seduced but also brought down the die-hard fans. The fear of getting a (too) different experience from the original is indeed there, especially with the presence of a shoulder-mounted camera or a revised colorimetry: To reassure the community, Anna Jasińska states that the team “Wants to stay close to the original (of the game, editor’s note)”.
We focus on bringing back the distinctive and visceral atmosphere in this modernized Silent Hill 2.
Longtime fans don’t have to worry about us “missing the boat”. We’re staying true to the traditional story while reworking the gameplay and updating the graphics from the start.
Also, if Konami chose Bloober Team, it’s because The company intends to respect the original material.
Those are the reasons Konami gave us the remake in the first place. One of the big visible changes is the introduction of an over-the-shoulder camera, which changed the perspective of some iconic scenes but also led to an overhaul of the combat system. The latest advances in technology work wonders when it comes to making images pop.
As you can see, we’re not deviating from the original concept of this great classic: we just have a few ideas on how to make the horror levers more appealing to modern audiences. (…)
We approach change with confidence. We stay true to the original title. However, we are making adjustments in some places where things need modernizing because time is still taking its toll.
Oh, if the media ask him When the story has been changed, as in some iconic scenes, Anna Jasińska gets in touch. “We’re starting to go into the details, so I’ll save my answer for later.” Shame.
Silent Hill 2 is expected on PlayStation 5 and PC in 2023.
