the Anime season winter 2023 is with the debut of highly anticipated shows like Nier: Automata and Mappa’s takeover Vinland saga. But the anime that has the most to prove to the anime community this season is triangle stampedethe CG remake of the classic anime from the 90s, triangle. After watching the pilot episode, I can say that the anime more than justifies its existence.
triangle stampedeby Studio Orange, is a fully CG-animated retelling of the 90’s sci-fi anime by Studio Madhouse, triangle. The story follows Vash the Stampede, a carefree gunslinger with a $6 million bounty on his head. Unlike other 90’s anime characters such as Cowboy Bebop‘s charming bounty hunter, Spike Spiegel, or outlaw stars space mercenary Gene Starwind, what makes Vash unique as an anime protagonist is not his penchant for violence, but his dislike of it. I watched the first episode of triangle stampede via Screener and is set to premiere on Crunchyroll tomorrow.
If you saw the last David Leitch action movie fast train, Vash is a bit like Brad Pitt’s character Ladybug. Or rather, Ladybug is like the live-action version of Vash in the way his luck and fighting skills repeatedly save him from harrowing gunfights. Vash’s nickname, the humanoid Typhoon, comes from the amount of destruction and disorder that surrounds it. Although his huge .45 Long Colt pistol is intimidating, Vash prefers to solve hairy encounters without taking the life of his opponents. Vash brings a rare kind of truth to the weapon’s colloquial nickname, the Peacemaker, by deftly using the revolver to break up firefights.
Watching the OG series is not required to follow or enjoy it triangle stampede considering it’s more of a retelling than a sequel. If the first episode is any clue, triangle stampede is on the first floor triangle What Fullmetal Alchemist: brotherhood is to the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime While the first few episodes of the original series meander a little with their slow introduction of Vash and the dog-eat-dog wasteland of the desert planet Noman’s Land, triangle stampede‘s first installment wastes no time setting Vash’s story and direction for the rest of the series.
In the premiere episode triangle stampede introduces Vash’s backstory and his raison d’être to fight for a peaceful resolution to the conflict surrounding the increasingly weary sci-fi world Resources. The show also reintroduces characters like Meryl disputewho is reimagined here as a very different, slightly more complex character than she was in the ’90s anime.
Instead of being an insurance agent, Meryl is a newly minted investigative reporter in the anime remake. triangle stampede Quick to discover how naïve Meryl is as she sets out in search of “her big scoop,” as she is consistently baffled when confronted with the brutal poverty endured by the residents of Jeneorah Rock under the JuLai Military Police have to endure. Unlike her original series counterpart, Meryl’s surprise at how brutal and unforgiving life on the desert planet can be routinely clashes with her naïve worldview. My only criticism is that her original accomplice, Milly Thompsonwas replaced by a new character, the grey-haired, alcoholic journalist Roberto de Niro. (Yes, that’s actually his name.) Though I’ll miss Milly and Meryl’s dual fish-out-of-water dynamic, Meryl and Roberto’s mentor-pupil chemistry makes for a compelling observation when the couple’s conflicting worldviews with the Harsh collide – tangled web of realities of life on the destitute desert planet.
Probably the first hard fight triangle stampede Faces with the anime community comes from the use of 3D CGI. Rest assured, it looks phenomenal. Character actions are fluid and expressive without looking cheap or spooky. When things heat up, gunfights and character movement carry an impressive weight. This shouldn’t come as a surprise when you think about it triangle stampede was produced by Orange, the anime studio behind the beasts and Land of the Shining Anime adaptations. The scale of each action sequence has a great cinema spectacle feel to it.
Another point of criticism for the fans triangle stampede was about Vash’s makeover, specifically his fluffy new hairdo. Imma keep it to you, I actually prefer his new work to his original one. Aside from loving the new look aesthetically, the artistic change makes sense given the breakneck speed of the action sequences and Vash’s larger-than-life personality. Vash’s undeniable charm and childlike innocence are perfectly showcased as his golden locks flow with his emotional gestures. If he wore his signature spiky hairstyle from the classic series, it would probably have made his CG model’s movement look stiff and lifeless every time he dodges bullets and causes mayhem. Fear not, fans of the OG hairstyle: Vash’s signature ’90s look makes a cheeky cameo.
with triangle stampedeStudio Orange defiantly imposes a moratorium on the anime community Aversion to using 3D CGI. With the grand scale of its techno architecture and the grimy, lived-in aesthetic of its dusty, poddunk western towns, every sequence in the first installment has the same epic sci-fi feel of a blockbuster film war of stars or dune. The world of triangleand the humanoid Typhoon that calls it home have never looked better.
