Last year a dream came true for puzzle lovers: Ron Gilbert himself published the official third part of Monkey Island. However, only in digital form, which of course annoyed collectors. Thankfully, Limited Run Games has come to the rescue and is releasing a physical version of Return to Monkey Island on behalf of Devolver Digital. Optionally with many extras.
Guybrush Threepwood is back and more puzzling than ever. In September 2022, Devolver Digital and Ron Gilbert released Return to Monkey Island, the official third part. Initially only on PC and Nintendo Switch, implementations for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S followed in November. But what all versions have in common: They were only released digitally, physical versions were missing so far.

Limited Run Games is now changing this fact. Return to Monkey Island boxed pre-orders will start on January 20th, and you have until March 5th to secure your copy. They are available for all release platforms. In addition to a standard version for $34.99, Limited Run also offers the CollectARR’s Edition, which comes with numerous goodies. In addition to the main game, the box contains the following content:
- Soundtrack on CD
- LeChuck introductory brochure
- Letter from Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman
- scrapbook
- Puffer Fish Stress Ball
- Fishing lures based on Chum’s fishing lures
- One of five collectible keys (one for each platform)
- Poster
- Booklet
A lot of fodder for the inclined pirate puzzle friend. On top of that, the PC version gets a floppy-style USB stick. The CollectARR’s Edition of Return to Monkey Island is priced at 89.99 dollars.
Limited Run Games also offers an upgrade kit for last year’s Monkey Island Anthology for $59.99. It includes a new wrapper so that it really lists all titles now. You will also receive a collection key, a reversible poster and Return to Monkey Island on the USB floppy disk.
Limited Run Games is important to emphasize that the physical version of Return to Monkey Island is being developed on behalf of Devolver Digital. It is not part of the Limited Run Games Collection. Once pre-orders have been completed, it will take around eight to nine months for your copy to ship.
Felix is a huge Monkey Island fan. So of course he was really looking forward to the new Return to Monkey Island. But does he like it in the end?
