Pokemon Go Mega Salamence counters, weaknesses and moves explained

counters, explained, Mega, moves, Pokémon, Salamence, weaknesses

Mega Salamence is the Mega Evolved form of Salamence, the pseudo-legendary Dragon-type Pokémon, making its debut in Pokémon Go as part of the Twinkling Fantasy event in Pokemon Go particularly exciting.

Like all Mega Evolutions, Mega Salamence cannot be caught directly in Pokémon Go. Instead, you must keep defeating it in Mega Raids until you have collected enough Mega Salamence Energy for its evolution. Thanks to the rebalancing of the Summer 2022 Mega Raid, this can now be done in a single Mega Raid if you beat it fast enough!

Below you will find Cons and Weaknesses of Mega Salamence to help you succeed in Pokémon Go – remember that you must have a Salamence in your Pokémon storage to perform its Mega Evolution.

Mega Salamence counters and weaknesses in Pokémon Go

The fastest way to collect Mega Salamence Energy is to defeat one in a Mega Raid. Below are Mega Salamence counters and weaknesses to help you achieve this:

  • Types of Mega Salamence – Dragon and flight
  • Mega Salamence is weak against – Fairy, Dragon, Ice (double weak) and Rock
  • Mega Salamence resists – Grass, Ground, Bug, Flying, Fire and Water
  • Mega Salamence was added as part of the Twinkling Fantasy event. (Image via pokemongolive.com)
  • Mega Tokens Mega Salamence – Mega Abomasnow or Mega Glalie with double ice moves will do short work of a Flying/Dragon type. If you don’t have them, your fallbacks are Mega Latios/Latias (double Dragon), Mega Aerodactyl (double Rock), or Mega Charizard X (double Dragon).
  • Non-Mega Salamence Counters – Ice cream is the most important thing here. Shadows aside, you’re looking at Mamoswine, Mewtwo (with Ice Beam), Glaceon, Kyurem, Aurorus, Avalugg (either form), or Walrein. Other than that, just bring your biggest dragons and hope for the best, but know that if you do that, you’re as weak to Salamence as Salamence is to you!
  • Number of players to beat Mega Salamence – Mega Salamence can be beaten by only two players if you have enough counters, and solo by a level 50 player with max counters. Three players at level 40 is quite reasonable, and five players at level 30 should be enough, as long as you bring the right Pokémon into battle!
  • Tactical – Ice, Ice baby… (good luck getting that out of your head.) Mega Salamence is a powerful enemy, but it is completely destroyed by Ice-type attacks thanks to its double weakness against this typing. If you’re battling in a group, be aware that most players will bring Ice-type Pokémon, so executing an Ice-type Mega in the lead will boost your friends’ Pokémon’s abilities, helping you defeat that boss faster and earn more. Mega Energy accordingly.

Everything we know about Salamence

Salamence.

The Dragon Pokémon Salamence is a Gen 3 Dragon and Flying type Pokémon, and is the evolved form of Bagon and Shelgon.

Not only is Salamence an incredibly strong Pokémon, but it’s also a fan favorite, and one of the few Pokémon to have a Paradox version added in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

On top of that, this family might have one of our favorite Pokédex entries, and the official Mega Salamence entry hits you right there. You can follow along (and feel some sympathy for our friend Dragony) by reading their entries below.

  • Car: Bagon jumps off cliffs every day, trying to get stronger so that one day he can fly.
  • Shelgon: ‘This Pokémon has covered its body with a hard shell that has the same composition as bone. Shelgon stores energy for evolution.
  • Salamence: ‘Salamence is an unusual Pokemon in that it was able to evolve a body with wings simply by constantly wishing it could fly.
  • Mega Salamence: ‘The stress of his two proud wings warping and sticking together due to strong energy makes him go wild.

It almost makes you feel bad for Mega Evolving Salamence, but the power spike here is real and worth it if you want one of the strongest Pokemon in the game.

Good luck defeating Mega Salamence in Pokémon Go!
