Already the first episode of “The Last of Us” established FEDRA as the evil, militaristic agency imprisoning and controlling the citizens of Boston.
But what are their origins, how did they gain so much power in the post-apocalyptic world of “The Last of Us” and what are their goals? Throughout the series, FEDRA will remain present, also as a great enemy of the Fireflies that Ellie and Joel want to get to.
This is FEDRA in the world of “The Last of Us”
The Federal Disaster Response Agency, or FEDRA for short, replaced the US government as the authoritarian force in the country after the Cordyceps fungus outbreak and the subsequent collapse of society. What initially served to protect the surviving population from looters and infected and to set up quarantine zones quickly developed into a veritable military dictatorship, with FEDRA active throughout the country and oppressing people.
Within the 20 years that elapsed between the outbreak and the storyline of The Last of Us, FEDRA, now functioning as a military state, developed its own contamination protocol. After that, infected people are divided into several groups. They also ensure that no infected or sick people get into the city.
In addition, FEDRA systematically restricted civil rights and established a dictatorship with its own leadership, administration, soldiers, factories and workers under the guise of martial law. Although they are still fulfilling their original task of protecting the quarantine zones, they are becoming increasingly unscrupulous against the population.
Mass executions are the order of the day. Leaving the quarantine zone is strictly forbidden. Food, water and petrol are strictly rationed and people have to do forced labor to survive. The Fireflies stand in the way of this suppression, carrying out more and more attacks and raids on FEDRA soldiers and outposts.
How evil is FEDRA in “The Last of Us”
The series of games from “The Last of Us” has always been characterized by shades of gray. Absolute good or evil rarely existed, instead mankind simply tries to survive by any means necessary. How FEDRA operates in other areas of the former USA, whether different conditions prevail there, whether the citizens have successfully rebelled or bandit gangs have gained the upper hand, we will learn in future episodes.
Despite all the brutality and harshness, FEDRA’s methods have at least kept several thousand people alive. But at what price? Is the total freedom offered by the Fireflies like Riley and Marlene more desirable in these times?
Can FEDRA change over time and rebuild a stable, non-tyrannical government and learn from past mistakes? Philosophical questions that have always been an important essence of The Last of Us franchise. In season 1 of “The Last of Us” FEDRA is a successful method to bring us closer to this multifaceted, dystopian future.
