Genshin Impact 3.4 has finally released for all of us daddy Dendro himself, Alhaitham. This stoic scholar is one of the few Dendro characters we have, and his abilities and personality mean a lot of people are drawn to him. What is Sand Grease Pupa for in Genshin Impact?
Sand Grease Pupa are tiny baby Quicksand Eels that relax, waiting to be picked up by travelers who pass them. They are found exclusively in the Hadramaveth Desert, the area that was introduced in 3.4, and many of them are found in the tunnels under the wind-ravaged desert itself.
You’ll need 168 Sand Grease Pupa to fully level up a character, and they take two days to respawn, so keep that in mind when looking to farm them.
As it stands, the only character that needs these little bugs is Alhaitham, the new Dendro sword user, but we expect more characters to need them in the future, potentially even as of Genshin Impact 3.5, Dehya being a potential candidate. for these bugs.

Where to find Sand Grease Pupa in Genshin Impact
Finding Sand Grease Pupa can be a bit tricky due to their general scatter. Although you can find pockets of them above ground near Wadi Al-Majuj and south and southeast of The Sands of Three Canals, most of them are found under the sands themselves near of the new Stekh Wenut boss fight under The Sand of Al-Azif and the Dunes of Steel.
Luckily, Hoyoverse has given us the option to see an underground map now. However, it’s not yet available in-game, but the official interactive map has got us covered. We’ve included screenshots to show you exactly where you can find these bugs.
You will find underground entrances wherever there are Cave symbols on the map. Keep in mind that many of these entrances are not traditional caves, but can often just be gaping holes in the ground rather than wedged into the side of a cliff.
As it’s a Sumeru specialty item, it’s worth bringing Tighnari with you if you have it, as its passive ability marks Sand Grease Pupa on the minimap as you adventure. Otherwise, keep an eye out for sparks near the walls when going through the tunnels, as that’s usually where Sand Grease Pupa can be found.
