A mobile with an “infinite” battery (which lasts 400 years). The discovery of some scientists makes it possible

The primary agents responsible for cell phone battery degradation are called charging cycles. On average, It is estimated that a smartphone battery lasts around 300-500 cycles before degrading. After that, its life is considered amortized and it is time to change it if you want to have the mobile again at full capacity.

However, some scientists have designed a battery that leaves far behind this average number of charge cycles, because it is capable of withstand 200,000 charge cycles and offer a lifespan of 400 years. Thus, it could be enjoyed by several generations. If they don’t get tired before mobile.

A battery for your enjoyment, that of your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren

Mya Le Thai was working on her doctorate at the University of California in 2016 when almost by accident he made a discovery about batteries that has not been disclosed until now. And it is that in one of his experiments he came to design a battery with a useful life of between 5,000 and 7,000 charge cycles.

His thesis was precisely on nanobatteries and among his experiments was coating an array of gold nanowires with magnesium dioxide. His goal was to make these nanowires less brittle and he also added an electrolyte gel to them. And so it came with that first long-lasting battery.

What is battery optimization and why it's worth turning it off in apps that need it

Along with other colleagues, Mya Le Thai continued to make progress on a prototype drum kit. Ultimately, in three months, they had managed to obtain a battery of up to 200,000 cyclesa figure even more impressive than the one he had initially discovered “by chance”.

For the moment, it is only a prototype which it has not been applied to consumer products such as smartphones. And it is not known whether the researcher intends to take this project further. Therefore, and too bad that it weighs us down, we will not be able to “enjoy” such autonomy. At least for now. What is clear is that a breakthrough of this caliber (and even much less) would make our lives much easier. Whether manufacturers are interested in implementing it later is another matter.
