The most visited website (excluding social networks) in France finally gets a makeover! An upgrade we’ve been waiting for for over 10 years. But what exactly will change?
Wikipedia, the encyclopedia that everyone has consulted at least once
This year, Wikipedia celebrated its 22nd birthday (15. January). The Internet’s most widely used collaborative encyclopedia, or as it likes to call itself, the largest repository of open knowledge in history, has seen a dramatic increase in content and popularity over the years. Today she counts 58 million articles written by volunteers around the world in over 300 languages
And for his birthday Wikipedia has received its first upgrade in over a decade. The Wikimedia Foundation has sought to introduce an updated interface make the website more accessible and user-friendly. While the changes aren’t obvious, some common annoyances have been fixed. The goal of this update was basically to make Wikipedia a more modern platform and to clean up some of the clutter who were there before. And on the other hand, to put the web version on a par with the mobile version in terms of accessibility.
The Wikipedia desktop update is one of the major improvements made by the Wikimedia Foundation to give people easy access to the world’s knowledge, as part of our mission to ensure that every person on the planet, regardless of where they live has free and fair access to knowledge or origin. What is changing at Wikipedia?
With this update The Wikimedia Foundation hopes to increase traffic to its website by 30%. And while not all of the changes are necessarily visible, many improvements have been made, as evidenced by the list below.
- The search bar has been improvedit now includes images and descriptions that appear as the user types to help them quickly find the item they need.
- The voice changer tool is also getting an overhaul. It now occupies a new, more prominent position at the top right, allowing readers and editors to easily switch between the 300 supported languages.
- Another modification: the fixed header. This includes links, the name of the page, various sections, and stays anchored at the top of the page as you scroll. This means you no longer have to scroll all the way to the top to find what you’re looking for on the page or site.
- The table of contents has also undergone some changes. It is now anchored on the left side of articles and allows you to search the content even if the article is very long. This makes it easier to move from one part of the article to another as you delve deeper into a topic.
- Added a drop-down sidebar for distraction-free reading and the maximum line width has also been increased. According to the foundation, limiting the width of long texts makes the experience more comfortable and improves content retention.
This is a small update that does not bring big changes. However, the foundation says these small changes have helped it perform better in tests involving groups of international volunteers. Users searched 30% more and scrolled 15% less. Like what, the changes, even late, are good.
