The development of Fuchsia OS has been confusing, and now comes a new scripting twist that may affect its implementation. Although it was initially billed as “the successor to Android”, it’s actually the foundation on which all Google systems will be built, including Android.

2023 was going to be big for Fuchsia OS, which is already available on some smart devices such as various Nest Hub models, but was going to expand to mobile phones, tablets and computers. A single platform that would dominate the market, adapting to each type of device.
Fuchsia, hit by Google layoffs
However, this future is now uncertain, after The New York Times revealed that a good part of the layoffs announced last week by Google affect the Fuchsia development team.
Specifically, of the 400 people currently involved in Fuchsia OS, approximately 16% were made redundant; And this number is not final, as there are still many employees living outside the United States who have not yet been notified. We don’t know exactly what positions were occupied by the people concerned, and how the development of the new system will change with a reduced workforce, but it is clear that it will not be like before.
It’s a strange movement, since not so long ago we were talking about it Google had accelerated the development of Fuchsiahosting a developer event focused on app building tools for Fuchsia.
This way we also knew that the original plan was that Android apps were going to be compatible with Fuchsia, to ease the migration to the new system. Android would work as a “layer” on top of Fuchsiaso for the average user, the difference would not be obvious to the naked eye.
The question now is what will happen to those plans with staff reduced by at least 16%. Google hasn’t made any statement on this, and it’s unclear whether the timelines have changed.
This is not the only future project affected by the massive layoffs at Google. Area 120, the group dedicated to developing experimental ideas, was all but disbanded, with almost all of its employees already out of business and only three projects still in development.
