The Razzie Awards: what is it?

While you don’t need to explain what the Oscars are, you might not have heard of that other film-related awards ceremony: the Razzie Awards. From their real name, the Golden Raspberry Awards, these are actually a parody of other awards shows, particularly the Oscars. The point here is not to give a statuette to the best films and the most talented actors, but to do exactly the opposite.

Traditionally held the day before the Oscars, the Razzie Awards have been around since 1981, and the 43rd edition will be held in Los Angeles on March 11th. The worst films of the year have already been chosen in 9 different categories:

• worst movie
• Worst Actress
• Worst Actor
• Worst Supporting Actress
• Worst Supporting Actor
• The worst couple on screen
• The worst prequel, remake, reboot or sequel
• Worst case scenario
• Worst director

Of course, it’s pretty rare for the winners of a Razzie Award to come by in person to collect it. Such an event has happened on a few rare occasions, however, such as when Halle Berry picked him up for his role in Catwoman, an Oscar in one hand and the Razzie in the other while delivering a spoof speech. But despite the ultimately good-natured mood of this ceremony, they sometimes go a little too far, as they did this year.

A mistake and an apology

Among the films of dubious quality retained by the Razzie Awards is fire starter, whose trailer you can find above. Rated 10% by the press and 47% by the public on Rotten Tomatoes, there is no doubt that the feature film, directed by Keith Thomas, deserves its place in such a ceremony. New adaptation of the novel charlie by Stephen King, it mainly shows youth Ryan Kiera Armstrong

Spectators and experts rose up and called on the organizers of the Razzie Awards to back down. Among them, we could highlight the tweet from Chris McKay, director of The Tomorrow War, in which the young actress also starred:

It was a pleasure to work with this wonderful, dedicated and focused young actress. She deserves positive attention and encouragement, and here’s one of our greatest modern film critics defending her.

Journalist Shannon McGrew also took the floor to explain“No child should ever be nominated for an award that knocks them down”. Luckily, the organizers of the parody ceremony heard the news and acted quickly to remove the name of Ryan Kiera Armstrong from the list of nominees. The organization’s president, John Wilson, also took the opportunity to apologize:

Sometimes you do things without thinking. Then we will point this out to you. So you understand. This is why the Razzies were created. Accordingly, we removed Ms Armstrong’s name from the final vote. We also believe Ms. Armstrong deserves a public apology, and we want to say that we regret any hurt she has suffered as a result of our decisions.

A very persuasive speech that was also accompanied by a new rule for future Razzie Awards ceremonies: Underage actors or directors can no longer be named. We hope that the young actress can recover from this inconvenient appointment.
