We tried God of Rock, a game that mixes combat and rhythm

Combat, game, God, mixes, Rhythm, Rock

In effect, there are very few games that mix rhythm music with other genres (although lately we are seeing more and more of them), so, God of the Rock come give us a fighting title mixed with musical game mechanics.

Developped by Mod Games, God of the Rock It was announced in August last year at the Future Games Show and we’ve been watching it ever since. Now, We were able to test its demo on PC and we tell you the most interesting points that it offers us.

The history of Gof du Rock

The history of the game is curious to say the least. The god of rock revived the souls of the greatest musicians in history so that they fight amongst themselves, for and for the amusement of the rest of mortals. Which brings us to witness fights that have nothing to do with what has been seen so far, but are based directly on rock songs and their rhythm.

God of the Rock

Rhythm is essential in God of Rock

The game presents us 1 on 1 combat, online and locally. In the demos we can choose between 7 different characters. We also have the option of choosing the scene where we want to fight and the music that will accompany us. We can even customize the rhythms in an editor to create variations in the fights.

The fights are based on something simple, but complicated to manage, if you don’t have a rhythm, of course. You have to press the buttons that appear on the screen, the more you improve, the more damage you will do. We can also perform special abilities by combining joystick movements with trigger presses. Some do more damage and others create distractions for the opponent, making it harder to press their buttons. Say that each character has their unique abilities.

The fights are for a single round, but they will not end until one of the two has completely exhausted their energy., which can last a long time if done well. The longer the fight, the harder it will be to press a button.

The variety of musical themes

Something very important in a rhythm game is musical variety, not constantly listening to the same rhythm, the same music or the same patterns. God of the Rock offer us a good variety of musical themes, more than 40obviously rock, but with a 16-bit layer on top. All the songs sound a bit retro And, personally, I think that’s something that fits like a glove, not just for this game, but for most titles in the fighting genre.

The art and sound section of God of Rock

God of the Rock It is developed with Unreal Engine and the graphics and art are very polished. We see at all times how the characters are loaded with detail and are animated with great style, never better said. The 6 scenes are constantly in motion, always accompanied by lights and characters to the rhythm of the music.

As far as performance goes, we didn’t notice any kind of FPS drop or anything like that, everything ran fine.

The soundtrack, as we said above, is a delightwhich also adds a nostalgic component with that retro touch of old consoles.

Ultimately…

God of the Rock It is extremely funny, beautiful and pleasant to see and listen to. It can be a bit overwhelming if you lack rhythm, but nothing a few practice sessions will fix. There’s no doubt that the game will appeal to its fair share of music and fighting game fans.

God of the Rock the next one is officially out April 18 on Xbox Series X|S, One, PS4, PS5 and PC via Steam.
