It should be clear that Far Cry is certainly one of Ubisoft’s most successful brands. It is therefore not surprising that, according to the rumor mill, new games are in the works.
The usually well-informed side Insider Gaming has once again poked holes in its sources and struck gold, at least for Far Cry fans. It was clear that Ubisoft would not let the series fall idle after the successful Far Cry 6, which was released in 2021. However, the sources are talking about two new games in development and already have some details ready.
Accordingly, the two new titles are said to be Far Cry 7, as usual a typical single-player shooter, and a pure multiplayer offshoot of the series is in the works. This is quite surprising, because apart from the cooperative game, Ubisoft has long kept its hands off multiplayer in Far Cry.
Allegedly, the two games were originally intended as one project, codenamed Talisker, but were split into two different projects early on. Far Cry 7 is now to be run under the working title Project Blackbird, the multiplayer offshoot as Project Maverick. Ubisoft Montreal is set to play a leading role in both games.
If you believe the anonymous sources, the multiplayer offshoot should play in the wilderness of Alaska after several changes last year and be planned as an extraction shooter. Of course, that would also enable approaches such as survival elements. Ubisoft had already gained some experience with surviving in the cold in The Division’s Survival mode. Insider Gaming is said to already have the first unofficial screenshots showing, among other things, lootable chests and extraction zones.
The possibility that Far Cry 7 will take up a similar setting is certainly there – after all, the games are said to have originally been a joint project. As the release period, the sources name autumn 2025 as the target date – so we will probably have to wait a long time until there is really official information, and Ubisoft can also expect postponements from time to time.
