News JVTech Electric cars: Tesla is overtaken by a major manufacturer in autonomous driving!
Split :
While Tesla was hoping to become the first manufacturer with a Level 3 certified autonomous car, Elon Musk and his family have just been overtaken by another auto giant.
Autonomous Driving and Tesla: A Complicated Love Story
for some years, Autonomous driving is Tesla’s great hope and at the same time its biggest headache. Between multiple legislations, high-end technologies and the confessed lieone has to admit that the American manufacturer has been fidgeting a bit in terms of automation for some time now…
For those who don’t know Autonomous driving has a scale from 0 to 5
- Level 0: No autonomous system
- level 1 : driver assistance
- level 2 : Partial driving automation
- Level 3: Automation of driving in conditions
- Level 4: High degree of driving automation
- Level 5: Complete driving automation
Spoiler: So far, no manufacturer has managed to offer a vehicle with Level 5 autonomous driving, and in fact this also applies to Level 4 – apart from a few automated shuttles. But even if it is complicated, the automobile brands do not give up and continue to work on the development of advanced autonomous cars. And to Tesla’s chagrin, Mercedes-Benz was faster!
Mercedes surpasses Tesla in the US
Hit Tesla! When it comes to autonomous driving, Elon Musk’s company has just been overtaken by Mercedes. As a matter of fact, The German manufacturer has just received Level 3 certification for its Drive Pilot autonomous driving system. Don’t expect Silver Arrows to be flying around Paris in complete freedom any time soon, however, as the system is only legal in the US state of Nevada.
In the modern world, time is one of the most valuable commodities, and giving time back to our customers is a central part of our strategy to build the world’s most desirable cars. Our Drive Pilot is a big step in that direction, putting us at the forefront of innovation in the crucial area of autonomous driving. Drive Pilot proves once again that our pioneering spirit is part of our DNA. The certification in Nevada marks the beginning of international use and thus the start of a new era. Markus Schäfer, Technical Manager Mercedes-Benz
The Drive Pilot makes it unnecessary for the driver to have their hands on the steering wheel all the timeand this thanks to the external sensors developed by the brand for several years, but also the addition of a LiDAR system and a camera in the rear window. This Level 3 certification also results in a transfer of responsibility from the driver to the autonomous driving system.. So that you understand that in the event of an accident in which the driver was unable to take the wheel, the vehicle must be able to stop on its own, take the necessary steps to report the problem and the to open doors. And the, Mercedes-Benz is the only brand in the world that can guarantee this – for the moment.
While Nevada is currently the only American state to have approved the Drive Pilot, Mercedes is already attempting to validate it in other Uncle Sam territories, most notably California. If you follow the words of the German brand, The Drive Pilot will be offered in the USA from 2024 in the EQS and S-Class sedans.
