Google Maps is the map application that comes pre-installed on the vast majority of Android phones and one of the most complete, although using it means accepting that Google takes a look at what you are doing from time to time. The alternatives to Google Maps are numerous, although respectful of your privacy and free, Not that much. One of them is Magic Earth.
Based on OpenStreetView, Magic Earth is a maps and navigation application with which you can perform the usual functions such as driving, walking or cycling routes, and some interesting additions. All that, without saving any data about what you do
A mapping application that respects your privacy
“We don’t track you, we don’t create a profile, we don’t sell your personal information. Also, we don’t have it.” This statement of intent describes one of the main advantages of Magic Earth over Google Maps and other similar applications, and without sacrificing many functions.
It’s a free and ad-free app, which you can download from Google Play. This is a similar pledge to Organic Maps, although in this case the app hasn’t released its source code.
With this app you can choose between satellite, terrain, hybrid view and have precise control over which layers you want to show on the map, including different types of points of interest
With 3D view of buildings (at least, in some places), in Magic Earth there is no shortage of finding places, including contacts or an easy way to find coordinates. As you’d expect, the app lets you do route both by car and by public transport, on foot or by bicycle. The routes work with and without an internet connection (download maps for offline use).
In general, the app has a bit neater interface than Google Maps and its functions are also a bit more limited, but even so, the app stands out for something that is not present in the Google app: the power turn your mobile into a dashcam
Display of the current speed and, in some places, also maximum road speedThere’s no shortage of Waze-style community warnings in navigating with Magic Earth, and you can send yourself a quick warning at any time to report speed cameras, stops, accidents, hazards, road closures, and more.
All that, without telling Google where you are. The application is free and you will find it on Google Play. If you have a Huawei mobile without Google services, it is also available in Huawei App Gallery.
