The Solo Developer »Khena B« has taken on one of the biggest challenges in the gaming industry: the development of an underwater VR game with realistic water physics.

Realistic water animation has always been considered one of the most difficult things to master in computer graphics. The first video clips that he shared from his solo project are all the more impressive. Those who have never dived before could explore the depths of the oceans virtually with impressively realistic graphics.

Diving in and out looks very realistic

The game doesn’t have a name yet, but it looks a bit like Subnautica in VR. Khena B keeps showing video clips of the current development status of his game on his Twitter account.

In a January 25 video, he demonstrates the VR game’s immersion, surfacing, and underwater physics. With some animations like throwing stones, you can tell that this is still an early version of the game and that there is still room for improvement. But the scenes already look very real, which could only be truer when wearing VR glasses.

In a further animation the developer shows how it could look even more realistic when you dive in and out of the water. A soft focus effect simulates the effect of the eyes opening under water.

Generally noteworthy: Unreal Engine 4 is used instead of the latest version 5.0. This shows how much potential can be found in an »old« engine. Nevertheless, the Unreal Engine 5 goes one better, which can be seen in the impressive videos by MAWi United, among other things:
