A major update for The Sims 4 released today on PC and consoles, bringing with it a new set of control schemes and customization options. This includes things like hearing aids and shapewear, but one addition specifically caters to trans-simmers to help them feel included and visible.
Developer Maxis accepted the official website of the game disassemble The Sims 4‘s latest update that includes chest binders and top surgical scars.
“Under the Body category, all players will find a Body Scars category with an option for teenage and older male Sims (male or female frame) to add a top surgical scar to their Sims,” the update reads.
“I can finally see myself in the game,” one person tweeted in all capital letters.
“Top surgical scars and binders?! That is so cool,” shouted another tweeter. “So happy that more representation is being added to the game.”

Binders and shapewear can compress a person’s chest or add more curvature to their body. In other words, these garments offer trans people additional opportunities to feel more comfortable, especially when they can’t afford or aren’t ready for body-altering surgeries.
“Binder and top surgical scars in the base game”, a tweeter asked in all capital letters. “[Let’s fucking go, this is a] huge dub of the Transmascs.”
“Oh my god I’m literally crying” said another tweeter with crying emojis. “Finally binder and top surgery! My little trans heart is so happy.”
There are also medical wearables, like glucose monitors and hearing aids, that do The Sims 4 everything more inclusive also for the handicapped community. It’s good shit.
“Binding materials, surgical scars, hearing aids and blood glucose meters?” asked a tweeter to this new Sim’s 4 patch. “This is the best update as we were able to have female clothing on male frames and vice versa.”

The team also added new ways to actually control and interact with the game on console, making it easier to navigate and closer to the PC version. All beneficial quality of life improvements.

Again, this is all extremely good shit. However, there seem to be some kinks that still need to be ironed out a bit, such as: Confusion about where things are and Upper surgical scars do not appear to occur in some people. However, having Maxis, and by extension EA, know and recognize their trans community in such a representative way gives me a good feeling. Perhaps other studios will follow suit and make trans-inclusive representation something worth investing in and implementing in games.
