Little by little, the electric car is gaining in appeal for the average buyer, in particular thanks to progress in autonomy and the expansion of the charging network, the two major concerns of motorists accustomed to finding a service station every few minutes.

Today, Mercadona has probably just convinced many potential buyers of an electric car, with the announcement of the installation of 5,000 charging stations.

Charging station in Mercadona

In fact, the car parks of some Mercadona supermarkets already have charging stations, designed to recharge the car’s internal battery while we shop; Thus, when we return, we will find ourselves with enough autonomy to return home even if we had the battery at the minimum.

In this way, Mercadona can do a lot to end the “anxiety” of consumers about electric cars, being stuck in the middle of nowhere and without the possibility of recharging the battery. It will also help plug-in hybrid cars further reduce emissions, by being able to use the internal battery instead of the combustion engine during city driving.

By the end of 2024, Mercadona will install 5,000 additional chargers in its supermarkets across Europe and southern Europe, which will add to the 2,000 points it already has. Establishments will be recognized as “New Efficient Store Model” for users, and 100 of them have already made the switch to the new system.

These charging stations will be “semi-fast”, with a charging speed of 22 kWh; i.e. they won’t have the fast charging capability possible in some of the more expensive electric car models, but it will be a significant leap, six times the current speed of 3.7 kWh if our car is compatible.

For the installation of these charging points, Mercadona has partnered with Iberdrola and Repsol, which will be responsible for managing service and customer service. This also means that users will have to use the Iberdrola and Waylet Repsol Public Recharge apps to pay for energy consumption while charging; the apps are also used to find our nearest charging station.
