latest update The Witcher 3 It was supposed to improve performance on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, but the latter actually ran worse.
The Witcher 3 released patch 4.01 earlier this week, noting that it “improves the game’s overall stability and performance on next-gen consoles and PC, and brings various fixes to all platforms.” The only The problem is, as Rock Paper Shotgun reports, that’s not the case on PC. When launching the game to test the new settings, RPS discovered that if you don’t have ray tracing enabled, the game actually runs worse than before.
A PC-specific addition added in this update is that a performance mode for ray-traced global illumination is now available as an option, where the hardware allows it. This setting “increases frame rates by prioritizing performance over range and precision” and apparently works quite well. However, without any RT settings turned on, the frame rate may drop below 25fps, resulting in a not particularly smooth experience (as seen here).
The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 rolled out last year, and whether it needs an update or not, like many next-gen games, you can choose between performance mode and ray tracing mode.
Elsewhere in the CD Projekt RED realm, the developer showed off more of its upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC in December, revealing that in addition to Idris Elba (aka Knuckles from Sonic the Hedgehog 2) would join the cast as Solomon Reed, “new FIA Agent for the United States of America”. The DLC is coming next year, but there’s not much word yet. We do know that Keanu Reeves is back as Johnny Silverhand, coming to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2023. But there’s no mention of a PS4 or Xbox One version.
