At Ubisoft there is once again a prominent departure to report. With Jean Guesdon, the director of Assassin’s Creed: Origins has now left the company.

Jean Guesdon is the next high-profile departure from developer Ubisoft. Among other things, he was responsible as creative director for Assassin’s Creed: Origins; he also filled the same position in the previous offshoot Black Flag of the successful series.

Now his 17 years at Ubisoft Montreal are officially coming to an end, as he has now confirmed via LinkedIn. There he has now communicated his departure, but gave no further information about the background to his departure from Ubisoft. Guesdon also initially left his future plans open.

“Hello everyone, 2023 begins for me with the end of just over 17 formidable years at Ubisoft Montreal,” he writes on LinkedIn. “I can’t express how much I owe this unique company. I’ve met so many people, learned skills and completed projects. And Assassin’s Creed, of course Assassin’s Creed too… Thank you Ubi, really very much!”

In his role as creative director, he brought ancient Egypt into play as the setting for an Assassin’s Creed and demonstrated the possible direction in terms of gameplay and storytelling. After the release of Origins, he also spearheaded the development of the first educational mode, Discovery Tour.

Previously, he also helped shape the pirate vision in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, but was also involved in the concepts of games such as Assassin’s Creed 3, Brotherhood, Revelations, and Project Legacy (a Facebook game). In short: For Ubisoft, this should be a very painful departure!
