Interview with the Figment 2: Creed Valley team
How did the idea of creating a franchise like Figment come about?
Figment was born out of the collective experiences we all go through as human beings. We explored surreal worlds tied to the human psyche with Back to Bed, our first game back in 2014. This time we wanted to explore the emotional side of things. The idea arose within the team to materialize nightmares that we have had, such as the nightmare of losing our teeth, the fear of spiders, all those things that leave a permanent mark on you.
What do you think makes the Figment series unique?
Figment is capable of telling serious stories, and personal stories, that affect us on a very deep level, balanced with a somewhat playful tone. The interaction of the characters shows the inner conflict we go through when processing thoughts. If we add to that an original score, we have Figment. I am very proud of what we have been able to do with the franchise.
What is the biggest change in Figment 2: Creed Valley from the original game?
Apart from exploring new themes of the human mind, I will list a few. Gameplay-wise, we’ve added new animations and mechanics to Dusty, Piper, and the enemies. We have also reviewed its graphics. Also, we have a combat choreographer where enemies attack to the beat of the soundtrack: whether there are 2 or 4 enemies, they will move to the beat. In terms of design, we’ve changed some of the puzzle formulas from the first Figment. There is less backtracking and more unique zones. Less backtracking, more unique zones, and there will be some changes to the power dynamics between characters. Of course, there will also be a local cooperative.
What is the main inspiration for the world of Figment 2: Creed Valley?
The amygdala region of the brain, responsible for our decision making and defining our morality. We really want people to explore our vision.
What design philosophy have you followed when creating the puzzles for this new game?
The fluidity of the game was essential when creating the puzzles. Making sure they balanced the fights and represented a way forward, and not just a barrier.
What was the most difficult part of the development process? And what do you feel most proud of?
The most difficult thing was dealing with the global coronavirus pandemic, since it blew us quite a bit. Still, we take great pride in being able to tell a mature story while still being entertaining, which is hard to balance.
How long did it take you to develop Figment 2: Creed Valley?
The entire development process for Figment 2: Creed Valley has taken us about five years.
If you had the opportunity to collaborate with another video game franchise outside of yours, what would you like it to be?
Sin duda, ¡A Hat in Time!
After this game, what plans do you have in mind regarding the studio’s next projects?
We have projects underway, which are actually brewing as we speak. Soon you will know more about them.
Lastly, is there any message you want to send to your fans now that the game is so close to launch?
We want to express that we read all the messages you send us. Some are touching, others make us cry. And it’s crazy to think that our little game has had such an impact on people.
Thank you so much!
