Look, you probably watched the show anyway and noticed it right away, but just in case you didn’t, here are a few people all cracking the same joke: that Rihanna’s halftime performance at the Super Bowl today Evening looked just like a smash bros Stage.
To be fair, it’s not really a joke. More of a case, just to state the obvious. All that was missing was a few backup dancers be thrown into space.

As a musician, Rihanna’s greatest strength—the thing that most differentiates her from her peers—has always been her catalogue. Other artists might be better singers or dancers, but apart from Mariah Carey, no living artist has more number one hits than Rihanna. It makes sense that Team Rih would try to fit as many of these songs into their 13-minute Super Bowl Halftime Show set as possible – unfortunately, the trip down memory lane came at the expense of other types of showmanship.
Rihanna opened the set high above the field, standing on one of the many breathtaking floating stages and singing her anthem “Bitch Better Have My Money”. This was by far the best moment of their performance and the stage was visually stunning. Many other artists have recently taken to the skies during their Super Bowl days, but none have used the space as consciously. Rih grinned with all the smugness we’d expect from someone calling themselves “Bad Girl Riri” — a welcome reminder of what we’ve missed in seven years without a Rihanna album.
